Abstract

Agriculture is one of the most traditional occupations which has a predominant role in the Indian economy. It continues to contribute to the overall economic growth and provides livelihood and food security to the people worldwide. Paddy production is the most important and widespread food crop in the world. It is the main food crop for more than 60 percent of the world's population. The majority of Asians consume and produce paddy. After China, India has the largest paddy-growing area in the world. In India, more than two-thirds of the population depends upon this crop. Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Orissa, Chattisgarh, Andra Pradesh, and Karnataka are the major paddy-growing states in  India. In terms of production, West Bengal, Andra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka are the four highest-producing states in the country.  Karnataka is one of India's most important top ten paddy-growing states. In the year 2021-2022, the state has 14.56 lakh hectares area under paddy cultivationand production of 65.47 lakh tonnes.It has a yield of 4630 Kg/Hectare and accounts for more than 3% share of total rice production in the country.The present study attempted to analyze the trends in the area, production, and productivity of paddy in Karnataka. It also focused on the comparison of growth rates of production and productivity of paddy during different years (2012-2013 to 2021-2022) in Karnataka.
