Abstract

Abstract

Purpose –This review paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the existing literature on the relationship between youth sports participation and mental health outcomes among adolescents, with a focus on gender differences.

Methodology/Design/ApproachA systematic review of studies published in peer-reviewed journals was conducted, focusing on research that examined the impact of youth sports on mental health. The review included studies that explored various aspects of youth sports participation, such as frequency, intensity, type of sport, and gender differences.

Findings –The review identified a substantial body of research indicating that youth sports participation is associated with positive mental health outcomes, including improved self-esteem, reduced anxiety and depression, and better overall well-being. However, gender differences were evident, with females often experiencing greater benefits in terms of mental health compared to males.

Implications –The findings have important implications for policymakers, educators, and healthcare professionals involved in promoting adolescent mental health. The review highlights the potential of youth sports as a means to enhance mental well-being, particularly among female adolescents.

Originality of the research –This review contributes to the existing literature by synthesizing current research findings on the relationship between youth sports participation and mental health outcomes, with a specific focus on gender differences. The findings underscore the importance of considering gender-specific factors in designing interventions and programs aimed at promoting mental health through sports participation.
