Abstract

This paper delves into the rich musical odyssey of medieval Kashmir (1420-1586 A.D.), shedding light on the enduring legacy of patronage under influential rulers such as Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin, Sultan Haider Shah, Hassan Shah, Mirza Haider, and Yousuf Shah etc. It unravels the intricate cultural tapestry that characterized this era, emphasizing the pivotal role of rulers in fostering the arts, with a specific focus on music.The study meticulously traces the evolution of various musical genres during this period, offering insights into the establishment of music schools and the cross-cultural influences that profoundly shaped Kashmir’s musical landscape. Through an exploration of historical accounts and court chronicles, the paper elucidates the ruler’s commitment to the promotion of music, evidenced by their financial support, encouragement of artists, and the introduction of new instruments such as the Rabab.By examining the socio-cultural milieu, the paper highlights the convergence of Persian and Indian musical traditions, contributing to the unique and diverse musical heritage of Kashmir. Despite the challenges that arose following the decline of the Chak dynasty, the study underscores the resilience of Kashmir’s musical traditions, sustained by individual efforts that ensured its survival and evolution.In summary, this research provides a comprehensive understanding of the cultural and musical nuances of medieval Kashmir, emphasizing the rulers patronage as a catalyst for the enduring legacy of its musical heritage.
