Jharkhand, which is situated in the eastern part of India is bounded by West Bengal to the east, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh to the west, Bihar to the north and Odisha to the south. It has an area of 79,710 square kilometers and is the fourteenth most populous and fifteenth largest state in terms of area. Jharkhand's latitudinal range is from 21º 58ʹ north to 25º 18ʹ north. The state longitudinal ranges from 83º 19ʹ to 87º 57ʹ.Jharkhand's principal cities include Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, and Hazaribagh. Hindi is Jharkhand's main official language. Oriya, Urdu, Nagpuri, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Kortha, Sadri, and Angaika are also spoken here as second languages.The physiography of Jharkhand is unique in itself as it has got varied relief features and consists of series of plateaus with various heights. The Western or Higher Ranchi Plateau, also known as the Pat area locally, is the highest plateau. It spans up to the northern portion of the old Ranchi district and up to the southern fringe of the old Palamu district. It is 2500 to 3600 feet above sea level. The word "pat" refers to a characteristic resembling a table's flat top and steep edges all around. It is covered in broken-up hills and has the hill resort of Netarhat at the top.
