The Role of Arthapatti in Ayurvedic Logical Methods

Abstract

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, utilizes a complex array of logical methods to structure and apply its extensive knowledge base. This article focuses on critical reasoning tools within Ayurveda especially Arthapatti (presumption) named Tantrayukti (logical arrangement).Tantrayukty provides a systematic approach for organizing and clarifying complex conceptsin classical Sanskrit texts. It ensures clarity, consistency, and precision in presenting knowledge,enhancing the comprehensibility and application of Ayurvedic principles. By examining classical Ayurvedic literature and offering pertinent examples, this study illustrates the complementary roles of Arthapatti and Tantrayukti in creating a cohesive and practical medical reasoning system. Arthapatti is essential for inferring conclusions based on indirect or circumstantial evidence when direct observation is unavailable or insufficient Arthapatti facilitates diagnosis and treatment through logical assumptions, allowing practitioners to bridge gaps in knowledge with reasoned inference. Integrating these methodologies significantly enhances the robustness and adaptability of Ayurvedic practice. This analysis underscores the importance of Arthapatti and Tantrayukti in preserving the effectiveness and precision of Ayurvedic medicine, demonstrating their relevance in both historical and contemporary contexts.
