Abstract

This research paper gives a brief description about the Tharu tribe and their history, society and culture. It engages on the controversy over their origin. Tharu tribes are generally the most backward communities located in the Terai region of the Indo-Nepal border. They live in both India and Nepal. In India they mostly live in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. It traces them during colonial rule because this was the time when the British explored every way to further their political and economic interests and profits. The paper focuses on Tharu Tribe through thearchival and secondary documents written during colonial rule.
