Abstract

The present paper is an attempt to examine the continuing relevance of Rabindranath Tagore's educational philosophy within the context of contemporary Indian education. Tagore’s educational approach emphasized the holistic development of individuals, advocating for an integration of nature, culture, and creativity into the educational process. This approach significantly contrasts with the modern focus on rote learning, standardized assessments, and a narrow definition of academic success. Tagore envisioned an education system that nurtures the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of students, promoting free expression, creativity, and a deep connection with the environment and cultural heritage. By analyzing Tagore's writings, his educational practices at Santiniketan, and recent trends in the Indian education system, this study argues that integrating Tagore's principles could address several critical shortcomings in current educational practices. These include the overemphasis on examination-oriented learning, lack of creative and critical thinking, and the growing disconnection from cultural values and environmental consciousness. The findings suggest that Tagore's educational philosophy offers a valuable framework for reforming the Indian education system to foster holistic growth, creativity, and cultural consciousness. By revisiting and incorporating Tagore’s ideals, contemporary education can move toward creating more enriching and meaningful learning experiences that prepare students to be compassionate, culturally aware, and responsible global citizens. This paper emphasizes the importance of adopting a more balanced, humanistic approach to education that aligns with the broader goals of personal and societal development.
