Abstract

The present paper describes the traditional and modern medicinal use of a Xanthium strumarium L. in eastern Uttar Pradesh of India. The plant is a rough or spiny herbs of family Asteraceae. It is one of the most important herbs used for various human ailments such as nasal obstructions, cinus congestion and respiratory allergies in Indian traditional medicine system. The plant contains various bioactive compounds like carbohydrates, tannins, phenols, saponines, glycoside, protein etc.
