Abstract

Panini’s Astaadhyayi represents the first attempt in the history of world to give an account of the components of language . It also analysis the components of the language  scientifically, Astadhyayi has been glorified as the first and foremost specimen of descriptive grammar, It has also been the chief source of inspiration  to the linguists engaged in describing  language all over the world.

Language   being mode of communication . Karakas play an important role in the science of grammar. The notion of karaka is basic to Panini’s derivational system. A Karaka is a thing  viewed in relation to an action.-क्रियानिर्वर्तकत्वम् । By the term karaka ,Panini describes six types of special relation to a word expressing an action. Karaka is thus synonymous  with the word cause and  occasions.

Etymology  of the word karaka means that which generates a kriya or action .This is clearly expressed  by aphorism कारके (1.4.24)  in  Mahabhashya  as a significant term[i]. The  simplest definition of karaka is क्रियानिर्वर्तकत्वम् or  क्रियाजनकत्वम्
