Abstract

Seventy-five years after the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the world faces unprecedented challenges that demand a critical reassessment of the human rights framework. While the UDHR's principles remain foundational, the 21st century presents a complex landscape shaped by globalization, technological advancements, environmental crises, and rising inequalities. This abstract argues that a robust and relevant human rights discourse requires moving beyond traditional conceptions and adapting to these evolving realities. This reassessment necessitates examining the effectiveness of existing mechanisms in protecting fundamental rights. The rise of populism and authoritarianism in various nations directly challenges the universality and indivisibility of human rights. This paper also explores these interconnected challenges, arguing for a renewed focus on intersectionality, recognizing the unique experiences of marginalized groups and addressing systemic discrimination. It advocates for strengthening international cooperation and institutions while simultaneously empowering local communities to champion human rights at the grassroots level. Ultimately, this work calls for a dynamic and adaptable human rights framework, one that acknowledges the complexities of the 21st century and prioritizes both the protection of existing rights and the development of new norms to address emerging threats. Only through such a comprehensive and forward-looking approach can the promise of the UDHR be truly realized for all.
