Abstract

Bhandara district showcases a thriving economy that embraces diversity, spanning across agriculture, industries, and forest resources. Within this district lies a treasure trove of wild food plants, a boon for the rural communities residing in the neighbouring woodlands who depend on these resources for both supplementary sustenance and medicinal remedies. Specifically, in the Pauni, Lakhandur Lakhani and Tumsar talukas of Bhandara district, a significant segment of the population possesses a profound understanding of edible wild plant (vegetables), seamlessly integrating them into their daily meals. Through meticulous research, the study meticulously documented and categorized 34 varieties of wild vegetables. This documentation shed light on their botanical name, local name, family & medicinal uses and phytochemical composition, encompassing vital elements such as flavonoids, carbohydrates, and proteins. Notably, among these botanical wonders, a selection of 10 wild vegetables (Achyranthus aspera, Argyreia nervosa, Basella alba, Boerhavia diffusa, Cassia fistula, Celosia argentia, Dendrocalamus strictus, Oxalis corniculata, Sesbania grandiflora, Tamilnadia uliginosa) emerges as extraordinary stores of nutrition and phytochemical richness. This distinction positions them as potent allies in the on-going battle against latent malnutrition, addressing deficiencies within the population. This invaluable insight not only enhances overall well-being but also lays the groundwork for the sustainable management of these precious resources.
