Gram Panchayats (GPs) play a vital role in driving socio-economic development in rural Karnataka. Established under the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act of 1992, they serve as the foundation of local self-governance, enabling decentralized decision-making and direct community participation. This paper examines the contribution of Gram Panchayats to rural development in Karnataka, focusing on key sectors such as agriculture, rural employment, infrastructure, education, healthcare, and women’s empowerment. It highlights the challenges faced by GPs, including financial constraints, political interference, and lack of capacity, while also presenting successful case studies that demonstrate effective local governance. The paper concludes with strategic recommendations to strengthen the role of Gram Panchayats in fostering inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development.
