Tawfiq al-Hakim and Modern Arabic Drama: A Study

Tawfiq al-Hakim is an outstanding Egyptian dramatist, novelist and short story writer. He is considered as one of the pioneers and leading figures of modern Arabic literature, particularly in the field of drama. His literary works got directly influenced by European literature. Modern Arabic drama reached at its climax after the noble efforts of some prominent dramatists who were influenced by the European scholars. Tawfiq al-Hakim spent the period of three years in Paris and came back to Egypt in 1928 with a great quantity of influence of European culture and literature. He gave a new idea and literary genre to the field of modern Arabic literature. As a result, he played an enormous role in growth and development of modern Arabic literature. It should be noted that in Arab world he is considered as champion and founder of modern Arabic drama.
