Abstract

In the digital era, media consumption habits have evolved significantly, with new technologies reshaping how individuals access and engage with news. This study explores the changing outlook on news consumption, focusing on WhatsApp's newly introduced feature, "Channels," which launched in June 2023. This feature has the potential to disrupt existing news apps such as Daily Hunt, InShorts, and even traditional newspaper applications, providing users with easy access to both local and international news without added costs. With its push news capabilities, WhatsApp Channels aims to offer real-time updates and streamline the process of staying informed on incidents that impact daily lives.

The research utilizes a quantitative data analysis approach, employing a time-efficient sampling technique to gather data through Google Forms. Responses will be analysed based on various demographic parameters, including age, gender, and occupation, to assess the broader influence of WhatsApp Channels on different audience groups. The study offers insights into whether WhatsApp’s new feature could redefine news consumption habits and potentially dominate the space currently occupied by traditional and digital news platforms.
